I grew up with the Anne novels and read the first 3 especially regularly (I hated that Anne had children - as a child, I knew I did not want that for me). Thank you for this history about LMM - I did not know any of this!

I loved reading this! I discovered the Anne books in my school library at around the age of ten and instantly fell in love. There wasn’t a single one that didn’t reduce me to tears at some point and they are still some of my most beloved books of childhood.

This is a beautiful essay and I felt quite emotional while reading it. Thank you.

This was a great essay. It’s sad that her life was tragic compared with that of her Anne.

I live a few kms away from the town she lived in for most of her life in Ontario. Your story is very different from the story told at her shrine in Leaskdale. I wonder which is correct?

Thanks for this. My daughter’s school just performed the play. It was clear that many people in the audience, including some of the staff, didn’t know the play, the book, and certainly not the author. I am so moved by the story of the writer behind the work, the way her story continues to resonate.

Wow Ann !, this is beautifully written!! I’ve loved Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Maud Montgomery ever since I my grandma gave me Anne of Green Gables as a birthday gift as a 11/12 year old. She played Marilla in her high school play back in the late 1930s in rural Kentucky. My sisters and I are planning a trip to visit PEI together because of the impact it’s made in our lives. I love hearing how your Caroline of Brunswick book is going on the podcast! Your podcast is a gift and I’ve shared it with so many friends and family! Keep up all your amazing work and know you’ve made a wonderful impact on the lives of more people than you know 😀💕
